Suspension tuning used to require wrenches, patience, and a lot of trial and error. The newest generation of electronic coilovers replaces that process with a smartphone app and a set of stepper-motor-driven damper adjusters.
Motorized Damping Control
Each coilover houses a small electric actuator connected to the damper’s internal adjustment needle. Instead of manually turning a dial with a screwdriver, the driver selects a damping value in an app, and the actuator rotates the needle to the exact position in seconds, both front and rear, all four corners simultaneously.
Ride Height on Demand
Many systems pair damping control with electronic ride-height adjustment, using small hydraulic or pneumatic modules to raise the car over speed bumps and steep driveways, then automatically lower it again at highway speed for reduced aerodynamic drag and a lower center of gravity.
Driving Mode Presets
Apps typically ship with presets such as Comfort, Sport, and Track, but the more advanced platforms allow drivers to save fully custom profiles, and some sync automatically with the car’s selected drive mode so the suspension firms up the instant Sport mode is engaged elsewhere in the vehicle.
Data Logging for Track Days
For track-focused drivers, several systems log damper position, G-force, and lap time together, letting an owner compare setup changes lap over lap without ever touching a wrench.
